My ext. HDDs never go to sleep when not in use -- all are used for storage only and for specific use; i.e., video, photo, music. I have the "put to sleep when possible..." checked but doesn't seem to do anything. Doesn't matter if they are connected directly to the Mac or via a hub. Anyone else have this issue?

There's a small, free, older app named "Semulov" that dismounts/mounts external drives.

It can be found here:
(you want to click the link "Semulov.zip")

As mentioned, it's old, but may still work for you.
Might be worth trying.

That's very cool and exactly what I've been looking for to juggle external mount points.

Thanks.

Can't i do the same with "Disk Utility"?

"Can't i do the same with "Disk Utility"?"

I suppose so.
But... Semulov works "right from the menu bar". Just "reach up to the menu bar", select the disk to mount/unmount, and done.
No fooling with disk utility...
