DOA 27" i7

New iMac arrived at my house yesterday.

Not necessarily DOA. Powered on all is good. Installed updates and everything went south. Beachball galore, had to reset because it completely froze. Restarted and could not boot off the hard drive (flashing folder with question mark). Went into disk utility and could not repair. Erased, re-installed, got back into Mac OS. Started the update process again, everything okay, start loading the iLife suite back on and beachball... Fizzle...

Drop back out and fire up disk utility errors on the disk, can't verify, can't repair. Run hardware test and no problems.

Bought in Hong Kong which is 3 hours of traveling and a trip through customs so I get to go to the local service center to try and work it out.

If anyone has any ideas of what I can try let me know. As far as I can tell the hard drive is defective. Apple was really not much help except scripting me through the whole process. They told me to either bring it back to HK or go to the service center.

But, at least the screen seems to be okay. The thing seems to dwarf my old 24" that I left back in the US.

Haha！ Easier said than done, will try the service center tomorrow and see what they have to say. If it's just a bad hard drive no problem. If it's a logic board problem or something then it is going back.

If you can write off the 1TB, upgrade to SSD.

Otherwise replace it, but have the risk of getting a yellow screen

bought from Hong Kong huh? I bought a 550D from DigitalRev off ebay thinking I would get a Domestic Hong Kong (Hong Foo) instead I was shipped a badly packed mainland chinese model(sui foo) with xerox english manual and they removed the original chinese manual and docs!!! Complained and ended up shipping it back.

I ordered a jdm Kiss X4 model from OGT clan to replace, came perfectly packed with all original docs. (I disliked the Rebel Badging)

Anyway back on topic, my i7 is from the original 1st shipment. no yellowing, I had a little issue with the CPU temp sensor, damn connector was loose and Fans roared at me. I did my own repair and installed an X25-M SSD and bluray superdrive. been perfect ever since. Didn't want to risk getting a yellow screen or dead pixels, so I settled on fixing myself than exchange.

i bought it from one of the premium resellers in Hong Kong so at least I know it's legit. They do not sell the Core i7 option in China for some reason. Apple China also only accepts Chinese credit cards, the warranties that they sell here are not honored outside of China as well. And, the Macs here are loaded with crapware when you buy them.

Oh, and the price is WAY higher due to the Chinese taxes. And the fact that there are no real resellers here means that other stores buy them and jack the prices way up. 13" Macbooks at the Suning store in Dongguan are nearly double the US prices. Crazy... Oh yeah, and you never know when you are going to get something fake here.

Might be cheaper taking a plane trip to Singapore or something and buying from Apple there :s
