I was wondering, anyone knows how many Apple computers (desktop and laptop) actually arrive dead? Not talking about damage during shipping, but hardware fault from the factory etc.
No specific reason, just curious.

I assume the number is very low as they copy the OS files, though I guess that could be done on the drives before they were plugged in the rest of the hardware.

You would have to ask Apple for that data. Nobody here can possible know. In all likelihood, it's a very small fraction of 1%, maybe close to 1 out of 10,000 since machines are tested before leaving the factory.

Oh they are all tested? Ok that would definitely make the number very low then. Thank you for your input.

It’s just one anecdote, but my kid’s MacBook Pro died within a couple of hours of arrival last summer. No idea what was wrong but the thing got scary hot, at least ~175 degrees Fahrenheit. I was bit worried so I took it to the Apple Store, thinking they would also be concerned about the temperature. The genius did not give a crap though because I had purchased through B&H (with AppleCare), offering to send in the hours-old computer for a two-week repair. B&H sent an advance replacement but I did learn an important lesson about how Apple treats third party sales.
