I'm running using a PPC iMac G5 with OSX 10.5.4 (Its hard for me to download updates - I live in the jungle)

Yesterday my dock sank to the bottom of the screen after I changed my desktop background. It doesn't always totally vanish, it just kind of sinks. Also now it disappears and reappears a few seconds later. The animations don't work now (for magnification) and neither does dragging off the icons to the desktop. Double clicking or right clicking does nothing also.

Interestingly though, it does function normally on the guest account.

Here is the error message I'm getting:

I'm fairly new to macs having purchasd this one a few months back from a pal of mine. This and the keeps ejecting CDs problem it has is making me wonder if I made the right decision!

Somebody please help?!

A bit of a long shot, but after a bit of googling it seems that maybe there is a shortcut in the dock to something that doesn't exist... possibly, don't really know what else to suggest, sounds like a strange problem. Maybe also try repairing permissions in disk utility.

Thanks for the tip although it hasn't worked for me yet (I'm still trying things)

I've just noticed that I cannot minimize windows or select programs with apple/tab anymore

Weird

Try deleting the com.apple.Dock files in ~/Library/Preferences and then log out and back in. This should reset the dock on your account.

Hi Purrball

The only file i have in Home/Library/Preferences is com.apple.dockfixup.plist in that directory, Is that the correct file to delete?

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

^ no, thats not your Home library's preference folder thats the root library's folder. click on your username in the sidebar and the open the Library and Preference folder from there.

You're talking about the Taskbar on top. He means the Finder - the little blue happy face square on the far left of your dock. That'll open a navigation window with a sidebar.

Or alternately when it says Finder up on top just hit Command:)apple:) + N and open up a new Finder window.

There are 2 Libraries. One under your Hard Drive, (the root Library) and one under your username that has the house icon in the sidebar (that's the home Library). From that second one, and find the Preferences folder in that.

Ok, Thank you for clearing that up for me skip.

I deleted the files and it reduced the amount of icons on the dock and reset the magnification to a large size but hasn't fixed the problem I'm still unable to use it and it keeps appearing and reappearing.

And now as if by magic (I had done nothing else) it has retuned to normal. Deleting those filese and logging in/out has worked, but not straight away.

Very strange indeed.

Thank you all for your help. I wonder how many other mac n00bs have had similar problems.....
