Speaking of docks - since this doesn't deserve it's own thread ...

How do I add a 'Folder' to the dock? Lets say I want a shortcut to my applications folder that I can launch from the dock.

I tried dragging the Applications folder from the finder window to the dock but all that happened was it went *poof* and now I don't have applications in the sidebar of my finder.

sidebar items can't be added to the dock, you have to use the actual folder. and folders can only go on the right side of the dock, next to the trash. you can re-add your applications folder to your sidebar with no problem too, just drag it in.

Beautiful! it worked. Thanks.

BTW, what is that spring like thing next to the trash. It goes straight to the OSX page which I don't need but the icon just looks so cool I don't want to get rid of it. Can I remap it to something else?

Replying to my own post. Sorry

Come to think of it, in Tiger, adding a Application folder to the dock is superflous. One click on the finder button brings up a window that has APPLICATIONS AND Home folder right there. No point in adding a dedicated APPLICATION link

That's a URL. You can drag a URL down from your browser to that side of the Dock and use it as a link. You can drag the OSX page out of your Dock and put in a more relevant one if you like. :)

But if you put your Applications folder in your Dock, you can right-click on it to get a list of all of your applications and open them without having to open any Finder windows.

*bows down to thee*

THAT is amazing. I just did it and it's like *sorry* like the start menu in WINDOWS.

Thanks. Great tip!

What you meant to say was that it's like the Apple menu in Pre-OS X... ;)

Well, the bastiches at MSFT copy APPLE all the time anyway. So, the start menu in Windows is copied from the APPLE menu in Pre OSX. Tada, by the transitive law of logic and mathematics, what I said equates to what you said :p :p :p

Thanks though. it's a great tip. No need to use the dock for every icon now.

Know what, (to the OP I'm SORRY for hijacking your thread btw) - OK - so we have 4 or 5 icons in the dock for the iLife suite (iphoto, movie dvd etc) (leaving out ical and address book and mail for now)

Can't you do a similar thing for these? I mean, right clicking on the Applications folder in the dock brings up all the apps. Can't you have a generic icon in the dock called iLIFE and when you right click on THAT you can choose between iphoto and the like.

I don't think I'm being clear actually. I mean 'categories' of icons under one main icon. So one for CHAT and when you right click you can choose ichat or MSN. To clean up some of the clutter

Since I'm not sure you got a definitive answer on this, you can relauch the dock by using Activity Monitor. (in Applications > Utilities). Find the Dock process then click the Stop Process button. It will relauch itself after a few seconds.

And eVolcre, you can also drag files onto an application in the dock and that program will open the file.

Sure...since your applications should continue to reside in your Applications folder, you can create separate folder called something like "iLife" and put aliases to the iLife programs in that folder. Change the icon to something cool, drag it to the right side of the dock, and there you go.

Or you could use something like DockFun! to other cool things with apps and docks.
