Hello,

I upgraded my system from Snow Leopard to Sierra and since then no matter what the version of Sierra, when the mac first starts up, the dock labels display as a black block. The only way to reset this is by using the terminal and using the killall Dock command and it'll be back to normal black text on a grey label but on a restart, the problem returns every time. Any ideas?

Please could you create a second Administrator user account and advise if the problem happens through that?

If the problem doesn't occur through a different account, this will confirm it's most likely a startup item causing the issue, so you can go through and disable each one in turn to see if this fixes the problem.

Thanks for the advice. I created a second administrator account and it doesn't occur on the new account. What should I do now? Where do I find startup items?

Edit: I checked login items and startup items. I had nothing in startup items. Strangely enough, when I autologin into the new admin account after a reboot (no dock problems) and then login to my account for the first time, the dock is fine. But when I autologin into my account after a reboot the problem occurs. That suggests it's really not the login items either. Strange.
