When i roll my mouse over the apps in the dock the icons are no longer magnified like they used to. However, if i drag something to the dock the icons DO magnify. At the time i was ripping a DVD to my hard drive using handbrake (for settings see attached screenshot). im guessing because im using so much memory for this then the computer stops certain effects?? Anyway, help is appreciated.

Go to the terminal and do:

sudo killall Dock

that'll reset your dock and probably fix the problem.

Is it still doing this when you are not ripping DVD files?

My dock got slow with memory intensive applications before I installed more at a later date. It is quite possible that this is a memory issue. I would sometimes need to leave the mouse pointer over the dock for an extreme amount of time before it responded.

::EDIT:: OutThere makes an awesome point!
