Docking Icons.

How do I place an aplication Icon in the dock without having the same thing (or its file ) visable on the desktop?

I have doen it a few times more through luck than judgment but can't seam to get it right at the moment.

All applications should generally go in your Applications folder, not on your Desktop. Open them from the Applications folder, then right-click (or control-click) on the Dock icon for the application, and click on "Keep in Dock."

i'm not quite sure what you mean, but all you need to do is drag programs to the left end of the Dock and files/folders to the right side before the trash can but after the separator bar.

I have just uploaded a new version of MSM I have the icon in the dock but when I open it it puts a file icon(?) on the desktop which stays when I close the application. It is the bit that stays on the desktop that I would like to prevent.

Is that msm as in messenger? If it is why not use adium? Kill two birds etc.

By the way, when you get a program from the internet and put it on your computer it is called downloading, not uploading. Uploading is the reverse, when you send something from your computer to somewhere else. As a point of order I'd like to mention that the less you use anything by Microsoft then the less problems you'll have. Welcome to the Mac, I'm sure you wont be leaving any time soon.

I think he's talking about the disk image.

When you download mac apps off of the internet they usually come in .dmg format. this is a disk image. think of it as packaging for the app. once you download it it should appear on the desktop as a sheet of paper with a hard disk icon in the middle. you can then open it up if it isn't already open. if it is and you see a white rectangular looking thing with a slot in the middle open that up. Then drag the application icon into you applications folder. You can then drag the copy in your applications folder to your dock and throw out the two files on the desktop.

I hope that's clear. sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to explain....

EDIT: Actually, the installing part is great but the putting in dock section is terrible and tells you the worst way to do it when all you need to do is drag and drop.

No YOU are wrong, info comes up the wire into my BoG so it must load UP hence UP load. Everybody else is wrong I am right
