Documents Folder Question

Hello,

So basic, I'm embarrassed to ask, but I guess asking
is still the best way of learning. so-

Running Mojave.

Re the Documents Folder to the right of the vertical line on the Dock.

Seems to have a bunch of Sub-Folders in it; some I probably created,
and some it seems to have created by itself. How are these default Sub-Folders created ?

Also several documents that apparently I dragged into it.

But I cannot seem to drag any of these documents into any of the Sub-Folders.
Won't let me. If I try, the document jumps right to the desktop. How do I do it ?

What is happening, please ?

If anyone has a few spare minutes, would appreciate
a simple tutorial on how this "Documents" Folder is supposed to function and work.

BTW: I do have all of the iCloud boxes UnChecked in /Preferences, if this is in any way iCloud related.

I am not sure you can move stuff around from the view that is installed on the Dock. Open a Finder window, navigate to the Documents folder and move stuff around from there. Should work without any issues. Let us know.

What is in the Dock is really only a short cut, or an alias.

Under Mohave go to Go in the Menu Bar and appears as second item. If you drag this to the Dock, that alias is created there.

As always, thanks for help.

As suggested, you can put docs in Folders, and do what I wanted from the Finder.
Just not from the dock, directly, apparently.

Many applications will put their own folders in there.

Like Brian said, some apps will create their own folders within the Documents folder to store files (that are related to your use of the app).

You can also create your own folders within Documents, and move your files into and out of these folders.

Having said that -- I don't use the Documents folder at all (other than having 3rd-party apps use it).

I maintain a separate partitioned "Data Volume" where ALL of my personal data goes.
I find it easier to maintain, organize and back up that way.
