Hi all:

I'm interested in being able to create and edit Word files and PowerPoint files. I've never been able to try either program (since I don't have my pad yet) so I'm not sure which one is better. Anyone tried both or have an opinion on either of them?

I appreciate any opinions. Thanks!

Documents to go is not out for the iPad yet, and using the iPhone version would be terrible. Considering how long it takes for them to release updates, I wouldn't hold my breath. Go for pages/keynote.

Assuming it comes out (hopefully soon), would you still go with pages/keynote?

If you look at the documents to go supported platform page, you'll see a listing for the iPhone/iPod Touch, but not for the iPad. It doesn't appear that an iPad version is available. If you bought now, you'd be restricted to an iPhone-sided display.

Check out the reviews of the current version in the App Store. There are notes of missing features: no tables in Word, etc.

Feature set is very nice in Pages and Keynote, and Apple will continue to drive those products because of the markets it opens up. If you have a need to make presentations on the fly, the iPad VGA adapter gives you a very nice portable solution.

The main problem with Pages and Keynote appears to be the workflow. Syncing files between different computers is less than optimal -- there's no transparent way to sync files. Gruber wrote about this on daringfireball.com a couple of weeks ago. If you google on

ipad keynote workflow

you'll see that and other discussions. Also, it appears there's no direct export of Keynote files back to Powerpoint. If you're bopping between the two programs, that might be a hassle.

You can always try Keynote and Pages on a demo iPad in an Apple Store. The only think I don't know if if you'd have any way to import/export test files.

I have both. I got an update today that said the next d2g update will be for iPad. Dataviz is slow so it may still be quite some time. I use docs2go on both my iPad in 2x and on my iPod touch. I prefer d2g for working with MS office format files. I prefer pages and numbers for working with local files that I don't need to share with windows users.

Docs To Go just updated their iPhone app. The attached notes mentioned that the next release will include iPad optimisation, so will be a universal app. Which is nice.

As has been mentioned, Dataviz aren't too spritely when it comes to updating D2G, so if you need a iPad office suite now go for Apple's.

<Looks like r0k got there first!>

While I have not used keynote much I find pages very disappointing. It's feature set is pretty small and if you do anything complex in your word docs at all it will likely get filtered out or poorly translated on import into iPad pages.

I'm sure this will improve over time but it's not going to happen quickly as even the full version of pages has trouble with many common word features.

I agree that even on my Mac, pages doesn't always do that well at opening ms word docs, which is why I use openoffice.org on the desktop alongside iWork, just like I use docs2go on the iPad alongside pages and numbers.

I'll be sending Word docs and PPT presentations back and forth to people in my office. It sounds like the best option for this would be D2G. Maybe I'll pick it up now since it's on sale. They may up the price when the iPad version comes out.

Any new programs or program updates come out recently that better deal with PPT? Word?
