I've got the middle spec Core Duo Macbook with 1GB of RAM and the superdrive.

Now, I can burn cd's just fine. Through iTunes or toast. However, I can't burn a single dvd. I've tried Toast and i've tried Burn. It'll start, then near the end it complains that the drive stopped responding (Burn) . Toast says there's a hardware error. I've tried plenty of different media, and I'm loathe to send the macbook in for repair after my last horrendous experience with the nearest apple certified center which is 3 hours away.

Any ideas??

The No bit shouldn't matter unless you have a disc in the drive. Maybe try resetting your SMC. :)

Newly tried that, it hasn't changed a thing. Cant even erase my DVDRW's, Burn says the device is failing to respond.

OS X's built in disk utility fails to erase disk as well, comes up with 'optical erase failed' .

I'm guessing my DVD Drive is broken then?:(

*sigh* looks like I have another 6 hours of driving over Easter again then. At least this time I have another computer so I won't be completely stuck .

Thanks very much for your help :D
