Ive read alot here and posted little. I now will join the masses of screeming disgruntled alu imac buyers/users.

I purchased imac 20 inch in november 07 (my first mac) was all good up untill 2 weeks ago when about 5 dead pixels appeared on the lower left of the screen. So a week ago when i had time i delivered the machine to the authorised mac repair they say not enough dead pixels but they deemed it faulty and ordered a replacement screen for me. Great i think! Waited a week went to collect it today and even after testing there was a big scratch on the new screen (behind the glass) that I noticed first. So left it at the shop again and hope the next screen will be perfect and I wont have to wait as long. On top of this the repairer scratched the back of the imac and gave me back an old power lead!

As we don't have a real mac shop in Melbourne I have to deal with these other people which are probably more helpful than apple them self. But if it takes ages to repair I feel its only fair to ask for some compensationor being without a computer.

at time of writing this post I am using my girlfriends flawless MBP running tiger.

Thanks for reading my rant.

Do you have an expectation that all Alum iMacs should be capable of being made without defects? It seems that the real source of you being disgruntled is an incompetent repair shop. But they are more helpful than Apple, you said.

Not an expectation at all, just hope! Nufins perfect.

What's the real source of your countless tries to defend apple?
Fanboi? Worker?
Open your eyes. The 20" iMac is a failure and the 6bit display is worse than any $50 screen currently on the market.
24" is a total different story but that does not change a fact that Apple simply screwed all those that went with the 20" seeling them a product with lower specifications (no detailed tech specs on apple website) than the prev gen.
Now stop making yourself look like a huge fanboi and stop replying to posts that are 100% entitled to show how ****ed up is latest Apples approach to get $$ buy using 10year old (if not more) technology in 21st century COMPUTER.

If your stance is as you stated, fine. But then don't post about problems with a repair shop, and then hold that in contempt of Apple's issues with the 20" iMac. Get it straight. To assign cross blame like that makes your case against the 20" appear to be as biased as any fanboy might be. Do you want your case to appear to be as biased as any fanboy, or do you want your case against the 20" to be based on sound observation and reasonable conclusions?

The OP posted back "nothing is perfect". Exactly. Computers breakdown after purchase, and the mfg repairs them. This is quite normal and certainly is not adequate evidence of a specific problem with the 20". I thought it quite appropriate to point this out and ask for clarification that the real source of frustration is a bungled job by the repair shop.

I also think that your characterization of the 20" as a failure is quite incorrect, and that the most overwhelming majority of people who buy one are quite happy with it. You only make your case weaker when you state things like "worse than any $50 monitor". Some are. But most are not. To only state things in such unfounded, absolute terms weakens your case dramatically. I think you are perhaps a little tainted by your own biases and the "forum bias" that exists here. Funny you are not aware of that, and yet are quick to point out your own unfounded opinions of my bias.

There's no biased opinion. Just a fact.
6bit screen is a relict that found it's way to iMac so Apple can rip people more. There is no other explanation.

Just for the record, you made 3 statements, and only 1 is a fact: The 20" iMac has a 6 bit screen. That it is a relic and that Apple used it only to rip people more are your opinion.

My opinion happens to be different. Most people who get the 20" iMac find it to be a great machine and would not call any part of it a relic. Apple used the 6 bit panel to be able to lower the prices on the 20" and move more units (wow, another explanation - imagine that). Their last 3 quarterly statements show this strategy to be an amazing success (earlier you called the 20" iMac a huge failure). Just different ways to see the same information. But when I voice my opinion, I am accused of being the fanboy, of course. When you voice yours, you claim it to be fact, when 2/3 of it is opinion. Now who is not being totally honest with themselves here? ;)

at peace

I picked up my imac today and it seems fine in the new screen department. As far as getting compensation from the repairer for a scratch obtained while in there shop, zip, zero, nada, nuffin. Its a little scratch and I slowly getting over it tho still thinking to call their HO.

If they have a HQ of course you should call them; why even wait.?
