My current 2019 16 MBP runs hot when connected to a Studio Display. The fan noise is fairly noticeable, to say the least, when just watching a YouTube video or having a Zoom meeting. Does a 16 MBP with M1 Pro run cooler when using it with a Studio Display? Would fan noise be improved compared to my 2019 MBP?

I am also wondering if M1 Max would run cooler or hotter compared to M1 Pro when connected to a Studio display and doing normal web browsing and document editing. I mostly only need CPU power for statistical analysis so the extra GPU power of the M1 Max is an overkill for me.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I have my 16" M1 Max MBP connected to 2x LG 5K Displays, Lid open for a 3rd display and this thing is running right now at room temperature to the touch and it is completely silent.

This is a well known issue with the 2019 16" model, that's because the Radeon GPU pulls 20w or more by itself using the external display instead of the supposed 7w.

This does not happen with the M1 lineup or M2 chip. I have a M1 Pro hooked up to dual 4K displays and I'm sitting at 54c with 2000rpm.

My work machine is a 16" M1 Max used in clamshell mode connected to two 5K displays and it is silent all day. It's a huge difference from older intel generation MBPs, it's one reason I love it so much.

Thanks everyone for the input. It seems the M1 Pro should be nice and quiet for normal use with an external display connected. I will report back my experience once the M1 Pro MBP arrives.

I got the M1 Pro MBP delivered yesterday and have used it for a day. It indeed runs much much cooler compared to my 2019 16 MBP. When editing document, browsing web, FaceTime video call, Zoom call or playing 4K video, the laptop remains cool and i cannot hear any fan noise. This is the case whether I just use the laptop or it is connected to a Studio Display. I will test its performance for doing more demanding work in the coming days.

Updates:

After a few days of use, I am very impressed by how cool the laptop runs. Even for tasks like importing and indexing large amount of email or using a single core for statistical simulation, I have never heard the fan. I also performed a clean install of macOS and haven't heard any fan noise during the installation process.
