can anyone comment on this? also please advise as to whether you have iTunes 7.7 or 7.7.1 (i have not upgraded yet)

From what I've seen, I think it was actually a server problem. It appears to be fixed as of this morning, but don't quote me on that. Also, get 7.7.1, it helps with those long back-ups.

After upgrading last night, I checked for updates and now the "update all" button works, but each of the apps with an update is displayed 3 or 4 times. The apps update fine but the display is messed up. Will have to check again tonight to see if it was a one time thing, but others saw a similar screen yesterday.
