If the expected new Airs come with Sandy Bridge running at least 2x as fast but generating more heat and fan noise does that work for you?

There isn't enough room in the MBA enclosure for Apple to put the CPU which many are thinking will go into the update. I would expect something more along the lines of the current C2D offerings, A low power i3 or whatever current or soon to be released offering from Intel.

That said, my 11inch was silent - if doubling the speed/noise on that - I'd definitely take it.

Current lineup:
13": 17W CPU + ~12W 320M = 29W
11": 10W CPU + ~12W 320M = 22W

Sandy Bridge lineup:
13": 25W CPU + 4W PCH = 29W
11": 17W CPU + 4W PCH = 21W

The TDP of 320M is unknown but 9400M has 12W so I'm using that as the TDP. Anyway, give or take a watt or two, it's not going to change anything. 320M includes the functions of chipset controller thus there is no need for another chip to handle the I/O and other stuff. Sandy Bridge still needs one though (PCH).

When just looking at the TDPs, there is no reason why SB MBA would generate more heat and noise. Obviously, the SB MBA has to come out before any conclusions can be drawn.

What is the point of this question? Are you worried about heat/fan noise? Is there anything that indicates that a U/LV SB CPU will generate more heat/fans than a U/LV C2D? It just seems like it's a fear-mongering thing to start talking about - when there's no indication that it'll happen.

As Hellhammer points out, the TDPs clock in around the same place - so the only indication is that heat/fans should be the same or less. And as he also rightly points out - no-one can answer your question till the machines come out.
