a user on the forum mentioned their iphone speaker after 3.1 was lower than on the 3G iphones!

Yes, keyboard clicks are DEFINITELY lower (which is a good thing IMO - I always found them too loud for the ringtone volume I use).

Ringtone volume sounds about the same to me at my regular setting.

I'd say that the lower keyboard clicks are a bug. If you go to settings - sounds and turn the keyboard clicks off and then back on, the sound will be played at the regular (old) volume.
I personally preferred it the way it was, it's completely off level compared to the other sounds now.

Tried that just now. Did not work for me. I miss the old volume. It's harder to hear the clicks now. :( - I noticed that turning it off and then on gave me a click to let me know what it sounded like. That sound is louder than what it ends up being. Rather annoying. Even at max volume it's not that loud.

Hurray! I'm not going crazy. I played music, and it seems fine. Keyboard clicks are definitely lower. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong...

It didn't fix it for me either, I was just reporting that the 'sample' you hear when you enable the sound in the settings is played at the regular volume. For some reason it's played lower whenever it's actually used.
Frustrating. :\

(Another thing I hope they'll enable one day is allowing the use of custom ringtones for SMS)

It will be played at the old volume only at that time (when you turn off the keyboard click sound off and back on). Once you leave that screen and start typing e-mail or something, then the volume will be lower again.

I can imagine the original volume bothering people sitting near you on the bus or in the train...

Please submit to apple a complaint/bug report. http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

We're not monkeys, we should be able to control the volume of our phones on our own. use common sense if you think it might bother someone and turn it to silent with the switch for that moment.

I havent updated my 3GS because of this, can someone take a video so i can see exactly how low it is?

Wow I didn't even notice until I just turned on my keyboard click. I actually like it how it is now. Before it was just too loud for the setting of my ringtone like others have said.

^ do u have a 3gs, because i heard they were the ones with the extra loud ringtone that sounded distored. i thought 3g was fine.

Yeah...sitting in my cubicle in a fairly quiet office, I always felt like the clicks were too loud when I was texting. My coworkers could surely hear them. Not anymore. Much better for me!

Yeah, I agree with the SMS thing. Would be nice to have custom ones.

anyone find if ringtones really do vary from high to low randomly? or if the ringtones are lower. I mean if they fixed the high pitch on 3gs wouldn't that also indirectly lower volume on 3g

I don't think so. As far as I know, the only sound that's been lowered with 3.1 is the keyboard click.
