I'm getting a Thunderbolt dock for my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro. It has two Thunderbolt ports, plus an HDMI port. According to the documentation, you can only have two displays connected to it if one is a Thunderbolt Display. (i.e. You can't plug in a mini DisplayPort display, or mini DisplayPort-to-any-other connection while using the HDMI port.)

I'm curious if using an iMac (in my case, a 2011) in Target Display Mode counts as a Thunderbolt display. I use my iMac in Target Display Mode, and my MacBook Pro supports that plus an HDMI display (plus a third external display on the other Thunderbolt port - in my case, using a mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable.) I'd like to remove the need to plug the HDMI cable directly in to the MBP, and have both the HDMI display and the iMac in Target Display Mode running through the dock,

Apple's "About Thunderbolt" page also implies that the Thunderbolt port's video support only supports two video streams if one is a Thunderbolt stream, the other can be mini DisplayPort or HDMI-through-adapter.

So, has anyone successfully used the "native video out" on a Thunderbolt 1/2 dock along with an iMac in Target Display Mode? Or will this just buy me some extra ports, and I'll still have to plug the HDMI cord in the right side of the MBP?

Edit: If you're curious, it's the CalDigit Thunderbolt station. Found for $65.
