Does a "Restore" wipe everything

Hi All,

I have a US iphone (1.1.1)that I have successfully unlocked to work on O2 in the UK. To get my data working I had to SSH into my phone and overwrite a few files(proxy.pac, preferences.plist, unknowcarrier.plist), this worked and I got data working fine. But, it now seems that when I'm abroad the iphone still pulls data, even though "Data Roaming" is turned off. I used to get a little pop-up when abroad telling me that I had to switch data roaming on, I no longer get this. I assume that this is a result of the changes I made.

My question is, if I restore my phone, will this wipe eveything? Will my phone be in a 100% virgin state? I hope that this is the case, as I can no longer find the backups I made of the files I altered It's a long story but it involves the loss of a laptop.

If anyone has any other suggestions as to what I could try, they will be much appreciated.

yes, a restore is like reformatting your computer. You will have to load all your songs, contact info, etc back onto the iPhone after restoring.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try a restore then. Hopefully this will fix my problem. I guess when I plug it back into itunes I should also set it up again as a new iphone, just incase it syncs the "problem" settings back?

The phone won't sync the "problem" back as it was a setting changeg by an unathorized third party app.

Just remember, make sure you restore to 1.1.1 and ONLY 1.1.1 (the default restore option is the latest firmware, which ISN'T 1.1.1), otherwise you'll have a locked phone or brick afterwards.

Restore does not remove everything; for example, info in the media partition is untouched. Your problem will probably be solved but there are no guarantees. Best thing you can do is manually remove all your extra stuff from the other partitions and then restore.

Thanks for all the replies, especially about making sure I did not accidently restore to 1.1.2, almost forgot about that

I restored my phone to 1.1.1, then plugged into itunes and synced with the stored profile. The problem did not got away. So I restored again, deleted the old profile and set the phone us as if it were new. Everything now works fine. The popup about switching on roaming has returned and I have checked my credit to ensure that it is functioning correctly. I don't understand why method two worked, but I thought I'd post it up incase anyone else has the same issue.

i have a legit i phone with a o2 iphone contract

and im running 1.1.2 with the installer.app

i downgraded to 1.1.1 then upgraded

what will happen if i just update to 1.1.3 in itunes?

and can i virginise my phone back soi get rid of installer i dont really use it i just want a normal iphone again?

Doing a restore will take you back to factory settings(deleting your media and settings), as opposed to an upgrade which will just upgrade leaving your settings in tact. If you then restore from a backup of your phone through iTunes, then you could have some problems because you've got some hacked settings coming into your re-virginized unhacked iPhone.

DannyBres: the best thing you can do is to do a restore, make sure everything looks good, set your phone up as a new phone like pjh did, then do the upgrade to 1.1.3.
