Hi, I'm new here. I'm thinking about buying a used iPhone 3g for the sole purpose of mobile browsing. I could go with the iPod Touch but that require a hotspot. I want to be able to use the Internet anywhere and anytime. So since the iPhone is capable of this, I would like to buy one. But I don't want to get the new phone with 2 year contract.

If I get a used iPhone, will I have access to the Internet and everything else that comes with the iPhone (except the phone service).

or do I need the 2 years contract in order to use the iPhone like an iPod Touch and access the internet?

You have to have a contract in order to have network access, which means a cellular contract for n number of years and a data charge.

Otherwise you have to rely on hotspots and might as well get an iPod Touch.

A used iphone will perform as a new iphone would. assuming you dont buy a defective one. If you get an unlocked iphone you can use any sim card, maybe one with unlimited internet/data bundle

thanks for the quick reply.

so if I get a used iPhone and have wifi at home. Can I use the phone as a pc-to-phone (using some apps) and browse the internet? also, another reason I want to get the iphone over the ipod touch is the fact that it has a camera. :D

Are you asking if you can buy a used iPhone and get a data-only plan to use with it? If you know of an unlimited 3G data plan that you can buy without a cell contract, you should be able to unlock and use the SIM in a used phone. I don't think you can get such a plan on AT&T, though...

You realize that you will still have to pay for that data plan, right?

ETA: What do you mean by PC-to-phone?

If

You don't want a data plan just buy a touch a iPhone with out data or celluler Is a touch. Also if you use the search function at the top of the forum you will find many of these questions have been answered several times.

You must purchase a contract.

There is a way around that:

1- Buy a used iPhone from eBay or someplace. If you buy from AT&T or Apple Stores, you will not be able to leave with the phone unless you sign the contract. If you buy off eBay you don't have to worry about that.

2- Once you get the phone, try signing up with T-Mobile and get a SIM with just an internet plan.

3- You must jailbreak & unlock the iPhone using Pwnage Tool or BlackRa1n.
