I've noticed in my flip flopping that iPhones seems to use more data than Android devices (even with iMessage turned off). Does anyone know why that is? Am I loosing my mind or does one of them compress the data better or what?

I know that the Chrome browser compresses data. If you are using an iOS device, most likely you would be using Safari browser.

It is also possible that you use different apps on each platform and those apps uses different amounts of data. Not all apps are available on both platforms and you may have to find substitutes when switching platforms. Those substitutes may use different amounts of data.

It is also possible the settings on apps are different on different phones. For instance, if you configure an app on one phone to do background updates every 15 minutes and the app on the other phone to do background updates every 2 hours, the one updating every 15 minutes will use more data.

The only way to know for sure is to use some data monitoring tool on both phones and do a comparison. I know they exist on Android. I'm not sure about iOS.

Android allows you to better control what apps use data in the background and you can limit how much data is used every month. So I wouldn't say Android uses less data out of the box but I would say it allows you to limit that data use as needed in ways iOS doesn't (yet).

Google Play Services / Location services is a huge data hog. Fortunately iOS doesn't suffer from that.

Not true. I have a ton of Google services running in the background all the time and even with GPS on and running on road trips I wont use hardly any data. Unless you consider 30-40 Mb for a 5 hour road trip a lot? I don't.

Chrome has better compression algorithms. Apps may use more data or less on various platforms. Comparing data use on different platforms is an exercise in futility.

Yeah I'd like to see some evidence of this claim too. Play Services only used 12MB so far this month for me and I keep syncing on 24/7.
