It’s been over 20 years, but still it’s surprising that I can’t seem to find anything online about the launch of Mac.com - maybe around 2002 or 2003 Apple launched this primitive online service for email and you could also have photo galleries. It was obviously before even OSX was launched, before the iPod.

I had a photo gallery on the service and David Lynch sent me a nice note about my pictures. In the wake of him passing away last week, I’m trying to get some information together about the launch of the service and it features and timeline, but I just can’t seem to find anything about it online whatsoever. If anybody has a link or any personal recollections about when Apple launched this first online service in the early 2000s, I would really appreciate if you could share that. Thanks!

It was originally launched under the iTools umbrella, which was rebranded .Mac a couple of years later. When .Mac became MobileMe the domain changed to me.com, then later iCloud/icloud.com.

No problem. See other threads for the wistful laments of many (like me) who wish they'd had a paid .Mac account at the time of the MobileMe switch so they could've kept their mac.com email active. (And the lucky few who somehow mysteriously had theirs reactivated!)

I don’t recall every detail but, yep, I participated.

I am still able to (and do) use the older domains. Which I choose depends somewhat on the context. I find @me.com to be a nice, somewhat generic domain name.

I'm one of the ones that wished they had purchased their .Mac email address. My best friend turned me on to Apple and she has one of those addresses. I kept putting off making the purchase and they switched to the free @me.com ones.

I use my - me.com - mac.com - icloud.com - email's still. Quite a few variations of them too.
So that was a purchase, no memory of that whatsoever.
But I so love them, thank you Steve ♥️🙏🏼

I never used mac.com but paid for mobile me primarily for the email I wanted, which I still use (have never once used iCloud.com!).

The only criticism I have of it, is I wish Apple did what Google did by effectively ignoring punctuation. I made the mistake of including a . in my address and at times I receive mail for whomever has my email sans . 😔

In the iTools era email was free, then they started charging with .Mac. Being a cheapskate I refused.

I thought Google addresses could have punctuation too (or at least, used to). Mine has no fewer than three dots!
