Does your 2016 or 2017 rMBP's screen color temperature vary from the side to the center?

Hi,

I have recently bought a retina MacBook Pro 2017 15".
While reading a PDF I noticed the color temperature gets warmer from the sides to the center of the screen. It is most noticeable on a white background with (colored) text or graphics in the foreground.

I went to the Apple Store (Brussels, Belgium) to get it replaced. The Genius I explained the problem to immediately saw it and told me it was far from the only MacBook Pro Retina (2016 or 2017) one with this issue. The "Expert" I had to make an appointment with said he did not see it. After insisting multiple times (calmly and respectfully) that the issue is present and that I expected perfection from a brand new $5000 laptop he finally agreed to get my screen replaced.
When picking up my MBP after its screen replacement I noticed that the new screen had the exact same issue. On top of that the aluminum on the back of the screen was nicked. I complained about it and am now waiting for the replacement to be done. This time I did not have to insist because the replacement was officially because of the nick.
When inspecting the two 15" models from the store I saw that one of them had this issue as well. The other might have had it as well but to a lesser degree.

I was wondering how widespread this issue might be and what I could do if the third screen turns out to have the same problem as well. I don't think they will keep replacing my screen and each time it takes a week before I can pick it up.

Thanks,

Tom

Starting with the last days of September I bought a Macbook pro 15" top spec and.. guess what, i got a red screen (some big areas on the display). Was ordered online with my configuration. They refound the total amount and i pay for another one in store(top spec as well). This was burn on corners ( white corners) and i was in store to replace this, they give me a brand new one. So i had a third one (3) ... few days and red screen, another few hours to change this. They give me a new one( number 4). In the first weekend was red screen. I post this on my country mac forum, the members they don't believe me , i post some pictures with red screen and serial number( i have mail receipts for them) ... Anyway, i swap the last one for a Macbook 15" 2015 ... base spec, one usb port is not working all the time. This happens in one month:((( Apple ****

Sorry to hear you are having problems too :S
I would have posted a picture of my screen (not a screen capture because the graphics card is OK) but my rMBP is currently being repaired.
If I have the same issue on the third screen I will be sure to take a picture.

I have the same red color when I play games sometimes. This is a screenshot.

Also this artifact sometimes appears:

And the red color sometimes also appears in CoverFlow mode in Finder.

Do you think it's a hardware issue?

I do not know if this is a hardware issue.
My MBP does not have the same issue. My screen has a constant reddish tint in the lower left quadrant.
The screen has been replaced twice now. The first two times the screen had a yellow tint on the left side/in the center.

All 2016 and onward have this issue.

I first start to notice on a 2015 MBP, but not all of them have the issue at the time. I have not yet find a single machine that is 2016 and above that does not have this nasty tint shift. It's really hard to show them in Apple store as well, since they purposely make the environment extremely bright that makes it harder to tell.

Unfortunately you're wasting your time. ALL 2016/2017 models has some degree of this, some worse than others. I was concerned about it as well. It looks worse when the display isn't head on. My advice is buy a color calibrator, calibrate the screen, and enjoy the laptop. My 2016 isn't "perfect" but honestly it never gets in the way of my work, and since I don't look at white screens from side to side, I haven't noticed it since I tested it when I got it.

Well this is very disappointing to read.
It was indeed quite a hard sell to convince them to replace my screen and - as mentioned in another reply - my new screen has a similar issue.

I am quite disappointed that this seems to be the case for all 2016/2017 MBP's.

Can a color calibrator affect only part of the screen? My third and current screen seems to have a reddish tint only in the lower left quadrant.

Unfortunately in my case it looks worse when looking head on. Only when looking at quite an angle from the screen (say 45 degrees from perpendicular or more) the reddish tint disappears almost completely.

I must admit I do not need the color accuracy but it is quite frustrating to have part of the screen not be equal in color to the rest of it. During normal use it is quite apparent when looking at websites with a white background.

No issues on my 2016...

Just FYI, make sure you're looking directly head on. If you tilt your head side to side to look at each side the refraction will cause a slight colour tint at the edges of the screen, if people are sensitive to colour issues on the monitor then often they can convince themselves there's an issue and ignore any rational explanation. Not saying anyone here is having that, but it's always the first thing you should check before going through countless computers and frustrations with support staff.

I’m sorry to hear it’s affecting daily use of you Mac. For the record my iPhone X has literally the same issue. I’m guessing it’s acceptable for Apple’s screens to have this issue.

Most likely your eye just ignore it. Try the 4x4 tree image and you will see it immediately.

PS: Anyone who claim they don't have the tint shift issue have not yet shown a single 4x4 tree photo... which I am curious to see one...

Nope just absolutely no uniformity issues with my computer, I'm a designer so spend most of my time hunched over it looking at and creating images, my eyes aren't ignoring anything. Under normal use there's no problem, if I take a photo with the flash it'll show up on the corners due to the technology, if I tilt my head it'll shift the colours due to science, and if I had red curtains and a bright day it'd probably produce an issue. But under none-artificial situations, I'm telling you my screen is perfect.

Maybe it's just mine, but I guarantee not all 2016+ MBP's have a screen issue.

I am also a UI/UX engineer, and I have yet seen a single photo that proved there is one without the shift tint from left to right.

I am not saying I don't believe you, but I would like to see one taken with 4x4 tree image from those who claim to have no issue.

I take it you mean this image? The thing is how are you looking at these to determine they're all faulty, because if it's a photo then you'll likely always see unevenness. As I said refraction means the corners, which are further away, have a slightly different shift. When using a camera, all the light is focused in the centre, effectively eventuating any unevenness.

So here's three photos, first one head on. You'll notice a slight blemishing to the edges, so I took to other photos at each corner. Each time the camera was the same distance away, only moved left/right. In real life, the display is perfect, but taking an image will always show some kind of defect which just isn't present in normal use (Your eyes are further apart and don't focus light into a single point like a camera).

Note: all taken at 100% brightness in a room with minimal lighting, to try and have the screen as the only light source.

The camera shots will never be perfect since how lights and sensors work, and also IPS technology itself have issue with backlit.

I am seeing a tint shift from left to right, which is what I been observing. You have one of the least tint shift I have seen, but still there.

The left have a pink tint shift and diminish towards to the right. I assume that your panel model is A030 if you have 15".

Yup.....they will do that.

They replace screens, even new ones, with old screens that were on someone else's computer and have supposedly been fixed.....lol

You never know if you're getting an older screen than yours or not.

I had the same thing happen to me when they replaced my screen.
New one had a scratch in it and I complained and told them about it before I left the store.
Told them I wanted a guarantee that the new screen, this being the third one, was no older than the original screen was at the time when I first brought in the latptop, which was about three weeks old at the time.
They told me they had no way to guarantee that and that the screen could be as old as when those screens were first published which today is about a year old.

If i buy through adorama or b&h and have this issue but don't want to deal through them, apple should take this in at an Apple Store if i present this issue and swap the MBP for a non defect one right?

Responsibility is with the company that sold you the computer for this sort of thing. So they may have a system but it's not a guarantee. If you want peace of mind, always buy straight from Apple. Or understand why it may be cheaper and balance it from there.
