Resolved Does anyone else know what drivers the 2019 MacBook Pro needs in order to print documents?

I hope this is the right forum. Please forgive me if not.

I just a brand new 2019 MacBook Pro 15"

On the Canon website, it says ICA Driver Ver. 4.0.0a (Mac) and also it has another driver that says MG3200 series CUPS printer driver Ver. 16.20.0.0 (Mac)

Which one do I need for just printing documents?

It should work with almost all printers out of the box. If you need to install extra drivers, your printer is either hopelessly outdated or the manufacturer doesn't properly support macOS in the first place.

MacOS and Windows support basic printing functions, printer manufacturers offer software that offer features like OCR and more. Nothing to do with “hopelessly outdated” to the OP try setting the printer up with your new Mac, if the printer does what you need your done.

My point is that macOS comes with a huge collection of printer drivers + is able to download drivers automatically on demand. As to advanced features: since the poster was asking for basic printing functionality specifically, I didn't comment on that.

At any rate, in my couple of years of administering IT at a university department, I don't think that I ever had to install a printer on a Mac computer. It just worked with all printers and scanners we had. Windows 10 — much more complicated.

OP...tell us what printer model it is. You'll get a definitive answer and not guesses.

Yeah. I agree with everyone else. Your MacBook Pro should already have the driver installed. If not, it downloading the basic ones as soon as you connect the printer. Any advanced features would probably need the manufacturer's software.

ICA is the drivers for the scanner and CUPS is for the printer.

It looks like drivers for your device are included with the OS though, so you should be good to go as is.

Every printer I've ever tried to print to on my Mac has ... amazingly just worked. From a super old HP laser jet to a new Lexmark color laser. Make sure you're on the same network, scan the network for printers, and bam, should work. It even works with a 15+ year old Brother laser that I have connected to my router.

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!!!!

All I had to do was plug in the printer and it prompted me to install everything I needed.

WOW. I did not know this was a feature. Thank you everyone for your help!
