Just the way it sounds, like a bit into a potato chip (or crisp for you brits) or as it should, a crushing of papers. windows users dont get the satisfaction of the trash can sound. just another way os x is better.:)

I enjoy hearing it, but not quite as much as the fuzzy crackling when you first start a vinyl record. mmm...*gets warm fuzzies*

that's a good one too. the only sounds we get from cds is the chirp when it skips.

does Mac OS 9 have a sound? I think it was the sound of a trash can lid slamming on the trash can or am i thinking of iChat?

*reboots to Classic*

I did turn (almost) all the system-sounds down. I don't like it, when I get disturbed by an unwanted notification-sound.

I also like to listen to the trash being emptied in Mac OS X. :)

Yeah man its awesome. On particular Sunday nights I have my "lets make random empty folders and dump them into the trash" session. Good stuff. :p

I don't like it. I'd prefer the boom you get when dropping a typewriter into an empty dumpster.

Only the general system alert sound. It seems everything else you can't. BUT IN WINDOWS YOU CAN!

is there any way to change/alter these system sounds so that they can be customized?
Yes but it's gonna hurt a little.

In System/Library/Components is a Lego piece named CoreAudio.component. Show package contents, and drill down to Contents/resources/SystemSounds

The noises are kind of scattered in there, but the trash effect is hiding under the finder folder.

There is also a useful program for exactly this purpose. By default it includes lovely vomit effects, but you can replace them with your own.

Especially if you drop it from high enough that the vibration makes the lid slam. I love when that happens. :D

Boooooooom...creeeeeeeak...SLAM!

cool, might have to play around with this in a bit. i had a look around on OS X hints and couldn't find where to locate 'em. thanks for the help. might have some fun with this. D'oh! for the trash anyone? ;)

Totally agree. My sound preferences:

I enjoy hearing it, until my Mac's uptime gets to a certain point and all of my system sounds stop working. No trash sound, no Mail sounds, no iChat sounds....

Then only a reboot brings them back.
