Does anyone have more free space on iOS 11?

Normally my iPhone would have 2-3 GB free on iOS 10. I upgraded from 10.3.3 to 11.0 yesterday, and it seems to have 6-7 GB free. Curiously, it also lists total storage as 32 GB, whereas in the past I believe it was 27-28 GB.

Does anyone know what's going on? Is the 32 GB a bug, a change in how they calculate/display free space, or did Apple free up several GB worth of space somehow? And is there some documented way that Apple is supposedly freeing up space on iOS 11? Because all I could find was on APFS (10.3) and the storage suggestions on iOS 11 (offload unused apps, etc - none of which have I used so far)

The 32GB bit is not a bug, but it is misleading. In the past, the space the OS consumed would be subtracted from the total free space. So even if you had no content at all on the device, you would see that 27-28 available. This was accurate.

Apple placed a 32GB memory unit in your phone. Now, iOS 11 quotes the entire capacity of the chip, disregarding the fact that the OS is installed. So while it says 32GB are available, there actually is only that 27-28 available. In this new way, it kind of seems like you have more leeway than you truly do.

Thanks for your post. I think there is a bug though.

My iPad settings on 11.0 GM said I had 3.1 GB available out of 16 total, yet it wouldn’t accept even a 1 GB file transfer via iTunes file sharing. In the past, I could reliably transfer 3.0 GB worth of files in that case. So something is definitely wrong, it’s displaying much more free space than is actually available. I’m sure that’s also what was happening on my iPhone.

Noticed that my available free space has increased from 3.25 GB to over 5 GB right after iOS 11.0 was installed (upgrading from 10.3.3). Then a few minutes later or so the free space actually further increased to over 6.5 GB. An hour or so later it's actually showing close to 7 GB being free. Not sure what's behind it really or how it's doing that.
