iPhone Does anyone know Whatsapp well? I've got some serious questions

A few days ago I was forced to log out of my Whatsapp because my phone number used to register Whatsapp has expired for quite some months but I forgot to update to a new number. Somebody got the number and used it to log into Whatsapp. I was very worried at first, and then I tried to log in with a new number and found that ALL my chat and conversations are still there (with a NEW number on the same phone). I was so surprised! I'm wondering if Whatsapp doesn't actually create any username and password based account like FB or IG or any other services but they are actually doing everything locally on user's device? It is really surprising to me
