Does anyone think Jobs set up Phil for failure

I know alot of you guys here idolize Steve Jobs and any negative speak about him hurts your feelings but for everyone else....

Do you think Steve Jobs being the ego-maniac that he is set Phil up to do this god-awful keynote? since he knew there wasnt going to be anything great introduced?

surely he didnt want to go out there knowing that this keynote would be subpar....

I think that if there was going to be a new mac mini, iphone nano, iMac refresh or something else exciting or revolutionary introduced we would have seen a skinny frail Steve Jobs up there giving the keynote.

I think it was weak because they're abandoning MacWorld as a platform, products will come out through out the year.

I loved Macworld, people need to get out of this hardware obsession. It is, always has been, always will be software that is important. In the future, hardware will be nothing, everything even down to the OS will be done and processed in the cloud and all computers will be cheap, small and low powered.

If you want to know when the iMacs, Mac Minis and Mac Pros will be updated, I will guess that Apple will hold a "Spotlight turns to desktops" event like they did for notebooks, some time in February or March.

yeah you're absolutely right. silly me i must be the only person who saw the keynote yesterday and was dissapointed by the boring nature of software presentation. I was also the only person who was dissapointed to not see any hardware.

No I don't think so. He picked him for the job because he knew he could handle it. All in all Phil did a great job at the keynote. Its only the fact that there were no really great product announcements to speak of that there are any negative opinions of the show.
The products that they did have at the show though were all solid and impressive.......but few and ultimately boring.

I think Phil did a great job. Sure he didn't have anything epic to give us but that doesn't reflect HIS performance. Did he fail? I don't think so, apple just failed at living up to the hype that's all. Hopefully they will "make it up to us" in the near future. Steve and company know what they need to do better then anyone else, I highly doubt there's anyone here that will bring them something they haven't already considered. It's always east to be a critic from a distance.

It would be rather hypocritical of Apple to pull out of trade shows, citing their decreasing lack of relevance as well as Apple's desire to release products on their own schedule, and then turn around and blow their load with a ton of amazing announcements at the very event they are trying to downplay and exit. This is all correct I think. This also means since Steve said he would be back in shape by spring we will see the new iMac and Mini at a future keynote. One that hopefully is hosted by Steve.

Then, when he finally got on stage yesterday morning, the teleprompter and slides in no way coincided with what he'd previously been told, and he knew he'd been had!

I dont necessarily think phil did a bad job, but you know when ever any experts write about the keynot or customers comment about it, they aren't going to say oh phil's presentation was great. They are going to say the products introduced were lackluster and boring.... this opinion of course is a product of the hype and expectations.

I also dont think it was a conspiracy but all i think is that Steve was willing to pass this one off on phil because there was nothing great or groundbreaking being introduced. I just simply think that if there was a great product being unveiled that was going to grab headlines, Steve Jobs would have been doing the Keynote. I'm sure he may look ill but he is not dying to the point where he can't give a 1 hour presentation.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and soft of disagree with you there.....

Since it was Apple's FINAL MacWorld EVER, they should have gone out strong. The MacWorld keynotes became synonymous with breakthrough product releases, and were the unveiling point of some of Apple's most innovative products. Instead of going out with a bang, they went out with a whimper, enough of one to even have news organizations report as much. When the biggest story to come out of a MacWorld keynote (besides MR getting hacked) was non-DRM iTunes. I think that alone speaks to the sub-standard quality of the keynote.
