Personally I’m not loving the iPhone options from Apple.
The XR is too big and the XS is too expensive.

Before you say iPhone 8, I’m talking new devices...with ‘all-screen’ design language.

Samsung has their A, S, and Note Series. And while I don’t expect Apple to go as low as $300, I wish they announce a lower-tiered iPhone X-style model in Sept. Maybe something in the $500-600 range.

The XR is it. When the 11R gets introduced, the XR will be reduced to around $600 to replace iPhone 8.

They can’t go much smaller as there wouldn’t be room on either side of the notch for the time and other data.

It seems that Apple has dumped both the 4 and 4.7 inch devices. Their focus is on large, extra large, and huge phablets. I hope the trend reverses very soon. I have nothing against their making phablets however that leaves the rest of us on old devices with no where to go. I use an iPhone 8 but that leaves nothing for me to upgrade to in the future. I want a phone that reasonably fits into my pocket. I hardly use my phone beyond calls, maps, text, and occasionally FaceTime with my sons. At any rate I feel your pain OP.

I think it would be an acceptable compromise to make a 4" (or taller) phone with no notch, even if they have to raise the chin a bit for symmetrical purposes. No, it wouldn't be a true edgeless screen, but the notch is so short as it is that I think we'll live

I’m kinda in the same boat. Currently I’m on the 6S. I think the XR is a great phone, but the size is not practical for me. My only option is to go to the much higher priced XS. It would be great to have an XS-size XR. There is really a gap between the XR and the XS in terms of starting price.

For my wife to come back to iPhone, they need an iPhone SE size device with a full screen.
I would be curious what phone your wife is using right now since most Android phones, even the “small” ones are at around 5.5” - 6”.

Apple doesn’t even have a high end all screen phone (notch) . Let alone a mid range one

I don't think they will every try the budget option. Soon they will be like boutique phones with this pricing.

Xiaomi just launched a phone with better everything or on par with the current flagship crop, for just around 370$...

Look up Redmi K20 Pro.

I would buy a phone with iOS, full screen and size like the 6s for no more than 700$, though. If there was one.

I don't mind if it has a plastic back (even better - no cracking) or a LCD ( I actually prefer them), and no IP rating.

Apple and Xiaomi are not playing in the same consumer segment, the ones hurting by Xiaomi is Samsung and BBK (Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo). I mean with the K20, who would want to buy a Samsung or OnePlus at higher price while running the same OS and apps? Apple still has iOS as its unique selling proposition.

There is certainly demand for that considering how popular the SE was. I agree the XR is too big for a lot of people and it would be good to see a smaller version of that this year. I think part of the reason the iPhone 8 is still selling so well is due to the fact it’s the smallest iPhone on offer and hopefully Apple realise those people will be looking to upgrade and would appreciate an option.

The only thing I think worth noting is to see what Apple does through the first quarter of 2020, if they decide to release another full (4.7) screen phone, as it’s been rumored they will. Otherwise, the XR is the phone that consumers will opt for, because it’s cheaper, offers almost all the amenities at the XS does and it still incorporates a lather display and outstanding battery life.

The point of any business is to make a profit. The best kind of profit is selling high-quality, expensive things in modest numbers and getting a good margin on all of the units sold. No company in their right mind should be diving into the low end to make billions of pieces of junk with a tiny return (or even loss) on them, unless your business is spying on people (Android) so that's exactly what you want even if you make a loss on hardware

I don’t think anybody here was suggesting Apple make ‘low end pieces of junk’. The OP suggested a smaller device priced around £600 which is the business model they had a few years ago without sacrificing a premium approach.

Yeah, I think Apple would do themselves and customers a massive favour if they released a iPhone XR Mini with a 5.6inch Display, that retailed for about $550 dollars with a A12 chip. I think you would see a lot of people flocking to that for its small size yet powerful internals.
