So I got a few dead pixels on mine and it's really bothering me, I got it the first day it came out, and was wondering, do they replace it with refurbished iPads or new ones? There's just something about refurbs that I don't like.

Chances are high you will get a re-furb iPad. I, too, hate refurbs.
I JUST dented mine. -____- But I saw a thread from last month. A guy was claiming he got a NEW iPad.
Yes, because that was last month. A month ago the reserve list was still on (I heard it closed now I do not know) and stocks were still very low. Today it's much easier to get an iPad and since many people have already returned opened ones and changed for dead pixels, you will probably get a refurb. If by chance they dont have refurbs then they should give you a new one - it's a hit or miss really. Go talk and if the guy gives new, you're good. If not, just keep it and try something else.
I'm gonna call support and ask. Thanks for the help guys!
Hey, no giving credit to anyone else but me![]()
Hehe. You're welcome.LOL. I thought I saw 2 people.
Correction: Thanks for the help dude!
Got my iPad wifi on launch day, 3 days ago turned it on half the screen was black with dead pixels. Took it to apple had a new one in 5 min. Awesome.
Also, mine came right out of a new box, watched him take it out, take the plastic off etc..but he would not let me walk out with the new box or unwrapped. He just didn't have one that comes in the brown box.
We were talking about returns and refurbs (I felt this guy actually knew what he was talking about when it came to apple products) and he said that even the brown box replacements right now are ALL new, it takes around 6 months for apple to begin receiving enough returns, refurbish them, and send them out to stores before refurbs are used as replacements. Makes sense to me. But I was glad to see mine come out of an actual ipad box anyways.
Actually the Refurbs are tested better than the new ones. The new ones just get the standard manufacturers final test. The refurbs are burned in and tested throughly.
The guy told me that upon the initial production they must make some extra specifically for early problems and they just pack them in the brown box instead of a nice iPad box because they are not going to be sold off the shelf, they are specifically reserved for problems with the first batch. iPhone 4 he told me is the same way right now, not enough returns to meet replacement demands, if you return an iPhone 4 right now, even from a brown box its new. Just what he told me which makes sense as it takes apple time to get enough problematic devices back to actually refurb and ship back to stores.
You guys were actually able to return dented iPads? Without an issue? That's amazing, cuz it's physically damaged, can't be a defect, right?
Hehe. You're welcome.
Glad to hear that you got a new one but I"m curious of one thing. If the refurbs aren't actually refurbs then why would they give out the "not" newly packed boxes to some people?
If it's dented they are not replacing it for you. My iPad was in perfect condition, not a singular scratch even, he did a full inspection of he iPad and I got it replaced because NO other damage was inflicted on the iPad.
You would think more returns of the ip4 would be made, because yeah the ip4, sucks, oh wait.... It's the best phone I've ever owned, no case, no bumper, works greatbut yeah please don't buy the ip4 cause it can't make phone calls.
lol anyone who returned the phone simply because of the reception "issue" (not proximity or other problems) doesn't deserve this awesome phone.
I think that the apple store folks have a little more latitude on what they can do.
I *did* get a refurb about a month ago from applecare. It had the same, and worse, problems than mine had. What led me to think that it was a refurb was the serial number and the guy that I was transferred to after I called to report that the replacement was gorked. He admitted that it was a refurb, and offered to send out another one. I asked if I could just keep my original one and wait for the patch that was due RSN. He was surprised and said that I could do that and to write KGP on the box so that some other schmuck would get it...
Yes, I remember the 3GS, they were taking new phones out of retail boxes to swap with people. Then they 'ran out' and started the plain brown wrapper boxes... Yeah, as someone alluded to, I wonder if Apple's manufacturing slaves put less time into the 'new' products as the refurb people put into the refurbishment process...
I've never had a problem with a refurbished unit and I own three...
