I just got a new 20" 2.4 GHz with the 3 year extended AppleCare.
On my last Mighty Mouse, the scroll ball stopped rolling after about a year.
If the one that comes with my new Mac breaks, will I be able to claim that under AppleCare and get a new one?
Right now, I'm kind of hesitantly using the scroll ball so it won't get stuck again.
Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

Yes.

  • An Apple computer
  • An Apple mouse and keyboard when included with a covered computer (or purchased with Mac mini)
  • An Apple display when purchased and registered with a covered Mac mini, Mac Pro, or MacBook Pro computer
  • An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan
  • The Mac OS
  • Many Apple-branded consumer applications, including iLife and iWork

Alright, good. Has anyone else tried this?
I'm still kind of afraid they'd end up blaming it on the dust and gunk that I let get in it and blame the problem on "user error" or something.

They will not blame you, although they'll probably try to clean it before they offer you a replacement.

You could always request a replacement over the phone (1-800-APL-CARE).

Ok cool, thanks.
I'm just glad to know that I'll get a new or fixed one without much hassle if/when this one goes bad.
I assume most/all will eventually crap out? I got tired of using my previous Mighty Mouse without scrolling capabilities for almost a year.

Just checking :p

I wasn't sure if it was purposely omitted or not, considering it comes straight from the Apple site.

I think they assume that you assume that built-in components such as the displays on macbooks are part of the computer and are thus covered by applecare

No, if you purchase an external display (which is what I think blurb23 meant) with an iMac or MacBook, you'd have to buy separate AppleCare for the display.

From Apple's terms:
Under APP, Apple covers the Covered Equipment and one Apple branded display if purchased at the same time and registered with a covered Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, PowerBook, or Power Mac computer.

Yes, the mouse is covered. I had a similar issue with my rollerball. I called AppleCare and they walked me through these steps:

1) Unplug the mouse
2) Get a paper towel and dampen it.
3) Flip the mouse upside down and roll the ball on the damp papertowel, going up and down, side to side and in circles. Do this for a bit. Applying a slight amount of pressure
4) Take a plain sheet of paper, and on a hard surface to the same thing that you did to the papertowel. Applying a slight amount of pressure.
5) Plug it back in and test it.

If it is still not working, they will replace it. They recommend that you clean the rollerball like that every month or so to keep it from build up.

Hope this helps.

How did you even find this thread? Its over a year old.

mac mouse stopped scrolling

We used electrical contact cleaner to clean the mouse by compressing the mouse ball slightly while doing a 2 second spray into the housing. Then rotating the ball on a clean cloth until the black drainage becomes clear. Works like a dream!

old quote

If this is directed at me, then it was due to an attempt to fix my mouse. When it didn't happen here, I found help elsewhere. Due to it working so well, I decided to share. Someone else may be looking for an answer as well.
