hey guys, i want to know if graphics displayed on the base 27" imac are up to par or better than the xbox 360. i am going to buy bioshock 2 when it comes out tomorrow and i just want to know where i would have a better visual experience.

Thanks guys =D

Hardware-wise, the iMac is better.

Really? Are you sure the 4670 is really better than the XBOX chip? I imagine the 4850 is, but I'm not really sure about the 4670 (I haven't seen it in action).

To the OP, try downloading the Demo for the first Bioshock and see if you can't make it run well. If you can get it to the settings you want, and make it run well, then Bioshock 2 should be OK.

EDIT: Thinking about it some more, getting Bioshock to run at 360 level graphics isn't a really demanding challenge. All you would do is set the visuals to medium, set the rez to 1280x720, and cap the fps to 30. Not very demanding on any modern computer really.

I doubt either the 4670 or 4850 will be able to ever push the 2560x1440 that the iMac screen has, and quite frankly, that rez is a stretch even for the best PC cards.

The 360's hardware was never amazing, nor the PS3's. Remember that most console games run at 1280x720, sometimes lower, which is what is a minimum for me on computer games, it's a really low resolution. And they rarely go over 30 FPS, which isn't that high.

I would imagine so, the chip in the iMac is higher specced.

ATI Xenos (Xbox 360)

ATI Radeon HD 4670

Both of the above posters make good points. However, everyone needs to remember that the iMacs actually use the mobility versions of the Radeon cards, despite what anyone tells you. With that in mind, yes, all the 27 inchers should have the ability to put out at least as good graphics as an XBOX.

However, I think people almost forget that XBOX games tend to do more with the limited hardware. I had trouble playing GTA IV on my 4850 iMac on anything above minimal settings, and my XBOX runs the game much better! That shows GTAIV PC is a horribly optimized game on the PC, while being much better written for XBOX.

Even if it is released for Mac, I would expect the majority will be playing the Windows version through BootCamp. Mac ports are usually quite buggy/slow.

will bioshock be released for mac? or will it be released only for PCs?

I played the game on my new iMac and it worked fine. Since they released the first one for the mac I presume the 2nd one, released today will to. Just google bioshock for mac and you will find some info on it.

Would much rather play on a keyboard and mouse then some sucky controller but thats just me. Bioshock played very well on Mac native and never had one crash I would say iMac.

thanks everyone for your great input! another question to those who have played bioshock on the iMac, what is the max great looking resolution that you have played it on. great looking meaning no stuttering, no lag or skipping.

thanks again =D

I've never ran across a Mac port of a Windows game that was "buggy and slow". Don't make it up as you go along. Most current games that are on both platforms are not even ports. What may be true is that SOME Mac ports may not be as great as the Windows versions but to most people playing you can't tell the difference, unless the Windows versions had more options in the game itself.
