Sorry for the double post — I asked this at the bottom of an older thread that people might not be interested in — but I’m at the mall and trying to get feedback ASAP before buying a new external HD.

Does CarbonCopyCloner work in Recovery Mode in Big Sur? That is, if I buy a 1 TB external HD, format it with a bootable CCC/Big Sur disk image, and then boot my MBP from this new external HD, should CCC be able to see my files and create a backup? (The MBP’s SSD is 512 GB.)

As detailed elsewhere, I have a 2016 MBP whose HD got too full and won’t boot except into Recovery Mode (and Target Disk mode, but I can’t get my other MBP to see it). I was able to install Disk Drill via Terminal and it was quickly able to see all of my files, so it appears my data hasn’t been wiped out. I’m seeing conflicting reports of what CCC can and can’t do in Big Sur and hoping for clarification. Thanks.

Updating the thread for anyone who might find it, CCC does not run in Recovery Mode, but it still proved very useful.

I bought a 2 TB external HD, installed Big Sur on it, booted my ailing MBP from it, and then CCC copied the entire MBP (450 GB), except for six photos that had been corrupted, like a champ. (Trying to copy large folders via Finder repeatedly failed with “device error.”) Awesome app.

So not sure of your situation, I have a 128 Macbook pro and cannot get Big Sur on it. Is this your workaround?

I don't have enough room, I have deleted so many things in the cloud and moved them to my WD elements desktop backup leaving me with 26.50 free-but still have 66GB of "other" I think Big Sur takes 32 or something
