Hi guys,
I currently own a 15 inch MBP with OS X 10.8.2. I also have CrashPlan online backup.Right now I have about 150 GB I need uploaded so obviously I want the backup to being running whenever possible. So, I have a question about whether or not CrashPlan's backup engine runs while the computer is asleep. have been told several, conflicting things. One one hand I've heard that as long as you don't close the lid, the backup engine will run even while in sleep mode, whereas if the lid is closed, the backup will not run, and thus the only way to ensure an uninterrupted backup upload is to either set Energy Saver to never sleep, or use a 3rd Party anti-sleep app such as Caffeine.app. On the other hand, I've also heard that it cannot backup while asleep, despite whether or not you leave the lid open. In fact, CrashPlan's own documentation says that the backup engine cannot run while asleep. However, lately I have been checking my backup logs in CP's desktop app, and it seems that some backing up does occur while in non-clamshell sleep. Does anyone have any knowledge on the specifics of how CrashPlan handles sleep? For example, it's possible that CP actually prevents sleep, overriding your Energy Saver preference setting, and that's why it appears to still be backing up.
EDIT: When I refer to "sleep" above, I am referring not computer sleep, NOT display sleep, which obviously would have no impact on CP.
Thanks for any help,
Alec
