Does anyone know whether if you expand your RAM on a new Macbook if this will allow the X3100 to use more of the system memory?

If it does would it automatically use the extra available memory or do you require to tell it that it has access to more RAM?

Nope, the amount is fixed at 144mb, but it can grow as needed; as for extra memory, it doubtful that Mac OS X would need more than 144mb and thus need to grab more memory.
