does external display save battery?

i use my labtop a lot to watch movies so do you guys think if i hooked my air up through hdmi it would save battery since i could turn off the actuall labtop display

probably it'll save you some battery life. But why don't you dock it when watching a movie on an external screen (you probably own) that has to be powered anyway?

Yes, sending sound and video out through your TV will boost your battery life by a substantial amount. Although if your going to be hooking up your macbook air anyway... why not plug in another cable to charge?

If you turn down the brightness on your MBA it save a tremendous amount of battery life.

Just plug it in if you're watching movies. There's no need to run on battery, if you're having to plug in a display. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:

by dock it do u mean charge? sorry this is going to be my first mac i dont even have it yet.

Docking it means it's no longer a portable unit. If you're connecting an external display, your only as portable as the cable allows you to be. In that sense, you might as well connect the power cord.
