No hard drive (to my knowledge) defrags itself.
In OS X, that job is handled by the OS.
If your external needs it, then OS X will do it as it find it.

But please note, that the defrag offered automgically by OS X is NOT the same as a defrag you get from a utility.

Read more from the horse's mouth.

First of all, are you using the HFS file system?

It's not so much that "Mac defrags", but more of the Mac OS being smart enough to save files in nice places when they are updated.

Im not sure it is the Mac OS Extended, I'm going to guess that that need not be defraged becasue OS X will not break up the files as long as there is plenty of space on the drive, which their is.
