I have an iPod Nano and want to get a new charging cable for it because the original mysteriously disappeared sometime ago. Apple chargers are hella expensive so I'm leaning towards getting a generic one, but I heard they can damage the device.

Is this true?

Go name brand if you can. Anker, AmazonBasic, -- just to name a few. I've gotten some cheap noname brand cables from Ebay that actually melted apart - almost causing a fire in my house one time. Stay away from no-name brand cables, no matter how cheap. Look for that MFI certification.
