Does icloud backup text messages automatically?

Yes, as far as I know, iCloud backups always include the Messages app (texts & iMessages); it cannot be excluded from backups like other apps can (e.g. Photos).

Ok, so as long as I do a backup first.

Then restore my iPhone I should be able to keep my text messages?
