This teardown seem to confirm that the 2023 Mac Studio still has a potentially upgradeable SSD. But does it also show that the module can accept two flash chips, and in this case only one is populated? I am not sure, that's why I am asking.

Yes, the ones with 512GB are half the speed of the >=1TB models.

Right, I guess there was speculation that they would just use the same module in the M2 version as they used in the M1 version which would have meant the Studio would have been spared from the single chip vs dual chip disappointed on base models, but that does not appear to be the case.

I actually have a base M2 Ultra 1TB model and it's very fast - over 6,000 MB/sec, a little faster than the M1 Ultra. But yes, the 512GB models are half as fast (read this forum, there are owners). Still 3,000 MB/sec isn't "slow". I edit off of NVMe drives on Thunderbolt that run at that speed (at best! It's usually closer to 2K). I have zero issues, even with multiple 8K streams.
