My 2011 iMac 27 will Airdrop to/from my MBP Late 2008, but cannot do it to/from the iPhone 6 Plus....on either iMac or MBP. Does anyone know why that is? I Googled it, but many people are having the same problems with no answer. I have read that Late 2008 MBP should work with Airdrop, and also read that it has to be 2012 or later. Thanks in advance.

The article on the Apple website is quite misleading.

You will need a mac of 2012 or later (basically, one that supports bluetooth 4.0) to be able to airdrop files to ios devices (and vice versa). With your current Mac, you will still be able to airdrop files to other Macs, but not to ios devices.

So basically, stop wasting your time trying to get it to work, because it won't. :(

What if I have an external USB Bluetooth 4.0 module? Would that allow for my Mid 2009 MacBook Pro running Yosemite to use AirDrop feature with iOS 8.1? Just upgraded the OS and pretty bummed out about this and other features like Handoff being only enabled for Macs after 2012... Any advise would help! Thanks
