I used to only have about 7 GB left on my 32 GB iPhone 7 Plus but ever since i have updated to iOS 11 it seems to keep less iCloud Photos on my actual device? I have had about 16 GB instead of my usual 7 GB of free space for the last 3+ weeks.

Anyone noticed a similar behavior? Only 900 mb of photos. It used to cache at least 6 GB of photos on my iPhone. Not that i am complaining. Just wondering

Edit: total on the cloud is 80 GB btw. I was actually impressed it could be brought down to 900 mb on the device

So you have "Optimize Phone Storage" on? Perhaps it's storing the thumbnails in HEIF. Perhaps it just deleted all your cached high quality images during an upgrade? Maybe both.

I noticed a large drop in locally cached photos. Really happy about this. My iPhone and iPad have a TON of space now.

More than likely what happened is when you did the update, it flushed any full res photos that haven’t been opened (looked at) for a while. (Say for example if you haven’t looked at one for the last 29 days or so)

Basically instead of waiting for space needed to start removing them from device. It cleared old ones out during the update.
