On my XS Max, getting to the control center is ridiculously cumbersome. Are there any other options in 13?

Er...how so? I have to confess I had to search to ensure we were talking about Control Center; as far as I know, one just swipes down from the top right. Am on iOS 13 beta 4.

It's impossible to do one one handed (I have big hands and can do everything else on this phone one handed, except access the control center)

Well you're just going to have to get bigger hands then.

;)

Seriously though, I feel ya on that one. I'd imagine you can also enable Reachability (Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Reachability), then just swipe down at the bottom to have easier access to it.

Edited to add - darn you WB2Colorado! You beat me to it. :p

Yes, it is extremely cumbersome. And iOS 13 changes nothing to it. Reachability looks like the obvious solution, but I would argue triggering reachability is equally cumbersome if not even more in one hand. And because the thumb has to be so stretched down, I almost dropped my iPhone XS Max while trying to trigger reachability.
After a few tries, Apple is expecting people to use their phones with right hand most of the time, not left hand. I have no idea what is the reason behind it, and I don’t see Apple using the other top side for anything else. Maybe if they introduce an iPhone with grip detection, they can introduce a feature in iOS to support control Center pull down position. Or better yet, make a setting similar to Apple Watch wrist adjustment setting for control Center.

I agree that control centre (and notification) access is terrible. It felt like an afterthought on ios 12 and I am disappointed it has not been re-thought for ios 13. Even adding the ability to change the action for the swipe down from anywhere for search would be an improvement. I guess if they had allowed more customisation on the home screen it would have opened up the possibility to use more gestures like force touch, or pinch in/out, double tap etc....
