I intentionally use some old versions of apps that have updates available. I also noticed that some apps got updated to use the latest Apple signing certificate, so they can "launch correctly in the upcoming releases of iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5."

Does that mean the old versions of apps I don't want to update no longer work on iOS 14.5? Can anyone confirm if they were forced to update any of their apps?

Apple updated apps with old certificates without the developer having to do anything.
I know that. I'm referring to apps that have been updated with the new certificate, but I want to keep the old versions which will never get the new certificate.

Went and bit the bullet. Old app versions, including those without the Apple signing certificate patch, work fine on iOS 14.5.

The carts are probably based on time - ergo they’ll expire on a particular date.

In the meantime the patch contains the certificate that’ll be used in future.

Not all of them. My infinity blade game for instance, wont install anymore. Works fine on my 8+ still running the 14.3

EDIT: downgrading back to 14.4 restores functionality of those apps. It's a hit and miss as to which apps work but most of the <2018 ones fail to open. So carefully weigh the pros/cons if you're staying on an older version because the developer:

1.) added popup ads/more ads, etc
2.) took away features from a paid app, then made it free + IAP
3.) Added bugs, got sluggish, instability, etc
4.) Made the experience more annoying by changing parts of an already perfectly working app
5.) All of the above

Apple is getting really annoying for dropping legacy features. Some of us just want stuff that works reliably.

I have a small handful of apps that do not work in 14.5; two of them are even still listed on the App Store but haven't been updated by Apple yet. Meanwhile some ancient apps that have been delisted for years still work fine. Go figure.

I don't really understand the technical reason for this, but I wish Apple were able to workaround this issue a different way instead of pushing out new updates. I'm bummed that I won't be able to play some of my paid games anymore without upgrading to the ad-ridden free versions or reverting to the previous version of iOS. Though I guess if this is a certificate issue, these apps would eventually break even on 14.4

Infinity Blade (all three games) are toast. Oh well the golden age of mobile gaming is done anyway.

Now that's infuriating how some old apps made the iOS 14.5 cut, but others didn't. Makes it even harder to pinpoint what the heck is going on with these certificate updates.

Case in point, the PapiJump series games, which haven't been updated for 5 years, work fine without their certificate updates, but some apps newer then that don't? Why, Apple?

I’m experiencing this with a few of my apps on my ipad since updating to 14.5. Very frustrating.

I don't get it either. I decided to look a little closer and found that some games that were released/updated in 2017 that don't work anymore, but I have another game that was last updated in March 2016 then delisted in July of the same year and it still works fine. It's a complete mystery to me.

Provided that no one asked yet... does Fortnite still work on iPadOS/iOS 14.5? I have it installed on my iPad Pro and wouldn’t update if it breaks it. Thank you.

I have apps on my iPhone that are no longer on the App store, and therefore were not updated by Apple automatically with the new certificate. I think I can kiss these good-bye forever, which is a shame. What's also a shame is that I should have been warned by the iPhone that these apps will be unusable by me after updating. Boo.

Not noticed any apps broken on my iPhone XS Max after upgrading to iOS 14.5 but it sounds like most of the broken apps are games and I don't really play games on my phone.

It's still working for me on my 11 Pro.
Thank you, I guess it’s not a very popular app over here because Epic and what’s happening, but I enjoy playing Fortnite (even tho I am an adult). I usually play on PS4, but, you know, it is always handy to have it on the iPad, also the season 3 is still pretty fun to play.

I have an App that I downloaded from the App Store called MyMedia. After updating to 14.5 the app needs to be updated. The problem is that it’s no longer in the App Store and therefore can’t be updated. I have 1000’s of pics in videos stored in this app and can no longer access them!!! I’m hoping Apple will fix the problem they’ve created!!! Please help!

Unfortunately, it seems like they changed the signing certificate requirements or something so i doubt they'll ever go back. Would have been nice if they started on ios 15.

Anyways what you could do is backup using iTunes and use a tool like iMazing to read through the backup and pull out your app data that way

I count this as part of the cost you need to take into account when using iOS devices, something that android can walk away freely (those android 5 emulators for example).

I just ran across this post so here is a possible solution if your device is checkrain compatible: jailbreak your device and then install appsync. This gives your app a bypass of the certificate, and your app can open. If your device is not jailbreak compatible, you can find another device, restore to the backup of your current device, and then jialbreak that second device and use the same method above.
