I have iTunes Match.

To update play counts in iTunes 12.5.3 with my iPhone (7 Plus) and iPad (Pro), both on iOS 10.1.1: no more than once a day per device—and after I play a song—the play counts of songs I played the day before update automatically in iTunes. Their Last Played field also updates.

These updates happen over the air and fairly soon after the first song of the day is played on the given device.

Is there any chance that the latest gen iPod Shuffle—or any iOS device or watch, for that matter—updates play counts while syncing? And/or syncs play counts more frequently than once a day?

iPod shuffles (the latest generation at least - I think the only difference for any of the iPods was the first gen shuffle with AutoFill, if I recall correctly) do sync play counts along with the date last played whenever they are synced to iTunes. Because you have to manually plug in the shuffle, though, it only syncs this info when it's plugged in and Sync is pressed (or Auto Sync is done).

However, I don't know if this is any different with iTunes Match or Apple Music enabled.
