I saw a 2022 MacBook Air offered for sale for $265 on my local social network. half-seriously wondering if I should go for it. apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum.

Completely useless unless you want it for parts that would cost more than $265 elsewhere, and some parts cannot be reused.

More importantly, it might be a stolen device, which you should not buy.

So I vote no.

That price tells you there is something seriously wrong with it. And if the previous owner didn't wipe it, it would still be tied to their Apple ID. You wouldn't be able to use it.

No: if the story is true they need to unlock the system (likely with Apple's help) and then sell. I think it's just stolen.

Either it's a scam, the computer is stolen or is locked out. I would stay far away from it.
