I typically am one that gets the latest and greatest although in this case, I think the X will stick around with me for a couple of years, its everything I want in an iPhone.

My buddy just got an iPhone 5 from the walmart family wireless and he is content. Personally I could not go back to a screen that size but he loves it and thats all that matters. He also only paid $149.99 for his and well, we know the cost of the X.

Apple relies upon the insecurities and group think potential in people to sell their products. The term “cult of Mac” wasn’t created from nothing

I guess that’s similar to how people judge others if messages come up with green bubbles instead of blue. I remember the time I switched over to my android device and one of my friends literally said “eww, why are your messages green?” Never knew it bothered people.

Yeah over the years I’ve learned that a iPhone is an iPhone. There really isn’t a need to get the latest and “greatest”. Apple optimized their phones very well and support them for years so why go out spending money on something that only functions slightly faster and has minimal changes?! The X maybe is a different story :)

I think of that as an issue only in the days when many people paid per text. Years ago I typically only texted with my wife. We were both on iMessage, so we figured we would save a little off our monthly bill by not purchasing a texting plan. Every time I would text with an Android or Windows phone user it was 10 cents a message. These days I think everyone has an SMS texting plan. Even me.

The only reason I still use my SE is because there isn’t an android equivalent in performance AND size imo. Pixel 2 comes close

And yet millions of iPhone users own no other Mac products, so how is Apple luring them? I've never owned a Mac, and almost went Android a couple of years ago. I stayed with Apple for the singular reason that they offered the best smartwatch experience, and in my opinion that is still true.

I'm certainly not denying the cult following of Apple. I've seen the tattoos, and I've known a few that I would say fit the title. The cult following is enough to wrap a line around the block from all the Apple Stores on release day, but that only accounts for a fraction of iPhone users. Many buy iPhones because they bought their first iPhone back when just about anyone you asked said iOS was easier to use than Android. That's still the perception many of them have, but the real reason they keep buying iPhones is because most people don't like to change their technology anymore than they have to. My mother was absolutely giddy that the only thing different about her iPhone 8+ is that the photo quality is so much better than it was on her 6+. She pays no attention to the endless advertisements and articles about new features. For most people it has nothing to do with insecurities. They just aren't that into technology, so when their old phone gets slow and the battery starts to die they stop by the store and ask for whatever the current version is.

I can't imagine that many people actually judging someone for carrying an iPhone SE, but maybe it happens among younger people. Will the SE2 confuse them? I could see how any smartphone that isn't nearing phablet size might be seen by others as something of a lesser device. I employ a lot of college students, and they really love their smartphones. For them it is more than a voice/text communication device. They use it for music, movies, games, snapchat, etc. On the other hand I don't see them comparing smartphones very often. it's only when one of them brings in something brand new that others want to see it. One of my students just got a Galaxy Note 8, and it's a beautiful smartphone. Maybe I'm paying him too much :D

I think I touched base with something similar in another thread regarding "defending your iPhone X purchase".

I only told 2 good friends that I bought an X. They were also X buyers so we were excited to compare it to our old phones and what not. However, the talk around my co-workers and other friends who could care less about tech was that $1,000+ for a mobile device is nuts. I agree its nuts, but coming from my 3 year old 6+ I was due for an upgrade. I mainly compared the X to the s8 as the size is similar. I went on here and reddit and ask for ideas.

I ended up getting the X. I have a retina MacBook as my other main tech device so they go well together (especially iMessage). When people ask why I would spend that kind of money and go with this phone I tell them this: I haven't upgraded in 3+ years (these people have upgraded sooner than I did, I held out for a new design), They also have an iPad, Apple Watch, and maybe a smart speaker or whatever (stuff I don't have, and don't need = saving $$$ to justify the cost). Apple just works (I had an s3 years ago and it was a breath of fresh air design wise but gave me problems down the road).

I enjoy the new size vs the plus size. The almost all screen, curved edges are a nice touch. Ill keep this for probably 2 years and then see what apple offers (or other companies) down the road.

I get the whole justification to friends, family, with buying an X. However I love it, use it all day, and it works. Get new friends (kidding).

I’m less concerned about defending my phone preference to anyone than I am that my preferred form factor will eventually get killed off for the more popular larger sizes. An all-screen 4S sized phone would be heaven to me. But I know there isn’t much of a market for something like that.

I live in an outdoorsy and laid back Pacific NW town (or small city) where people who have money tend to hide it rather than flaunt it. The joke around here is that whenever you compliment someone on a car, gadget, article of clothing, etc. that you know was expensive they will reply with, “Thanks... I got a really good deal on it,” or “it was a gift.”

People around here pride themselves on being practical rather than flashy. I’m not saying that I hide my iPhone X, but I would say that most people around here would appreciate the practical reasons for having a more compact phone... especially when it’s a comparative bargain. I could list all the reasons why I think the X is worth it, but most would never believe me.

We live in a consumer culture of limitless choices that previous generations couldn’t have imagined. Perhaps that is why so many try to read so much into the products we choose to purchase. Or maybe seeing others choose something we didn’t makes us doubt our own choice? Whenever someone criticizes another about a personal choice, it makes me think there is some degree of envy involved.

There are A lot more pertinent things in life than to be concerned about someone else's opinion Over a smart phone. I can't recall a time ever someone has posted their opinion on my choice of a smart phone outside a tech forum. It's odd to begin with.

If you're 40, maybe; if you're 20, not odd at all.

When did it become mandatory to upgrade to the newest iPhone? I’ve had people make a negative association because of my decision to use the iPhone SE over my iPhone X.

What I constantly hear is “omg that phone is so tiny I could never use something like that” or “that’s something I would get for my kids” and most recently “couldn’t afford the iPhone X huh?!” I thought phones were supposed to be for the persons own personal needs not as a trend or to show that you have money to blow? Don’t get me wrong I really like the X, but I just find this form factor so much more comfortable to use.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

My main question is why do you have a SE and a X? I say pick the one that fits your needs and don’t worry about what others think or say.

It really doesn't matter. A piece of electronic hardware as a fashion or status piece is silly in the extreme. Apple practically invented the concept in this market by reinventing the iPod when it was all conquering. Now it seems to be viewed almost as a basic human need. It's not. It's nothing compared to living a real life and dealing with real issues.

Smartphones are just the latest highly-visible fashion accessory which people can use to categorize and belittle each other. Why? It's usually an effort to make themselves feel better about their own choices and identities.

Remember that the people doing this are motivated by their insecurities about themselves, and they're just using you as an "other" they can target to feel better -- it really has nothing to do with you.

Ironically enough, I don't even notice what types of phones others use in the every day world. Why? Because I don't care. Whatever somebody chooses to use for Phone is their own preference and it's like judging somebody for what they wear for clothes. Everyone is different and it's a matter of mutual respect.
