The MBA definitely prefers hard flat surfaces that allow both radiation and convection cooling. Not too bad propped up on the lap as this still allows radiant cooling and does not block much of the main venting at the bottom rear of the machine.

But put it on a soft flat surface and it will block both radiant heating and all of the main vent on the bottom. You just don't want to do that. If you have to set it down there, sleep it or use a notebook pad or clipboard or something.

And yes the uMB's have it a little better - more radiant surface and a vent on the rear that takes a bit softer surface to block. But I would still tend to sleep them or use a pad rather than leaving them on a really soft surface for any length of time.

How does the Air manage it's noise and heat while sitting in a lap or on a bed?

The unibody does quite well at this I think.

MBA fan ports are all on the bottom, not in the hinge like the MBP so no it doesn't do well if your used to laying the MBP on your chest or on some covers while laying in bed to watch video. It will kick the fans to the max, which will drown out the sound and heat up quickly.

On your lap it's not as bad if your keep your legs apart enough to not cover the air slots but be sure, the MBA design is very different from the fans/cooling on a MBP. I love it (MBA) but can't own one due to the fan noise and some other issues I've had with em. GL.

Does it run hot and noisy in a lap or on a bed?

Indeed it does young lady! Now, about that MBA...
