To me it would seem like you have to be careful with this.

Hopefully one day they will have so much storage it won't matter anymore. Yes you could say the 2 TB version is like that but even then that is not enough for some.

I think that with just about any modern Apple device that has an SSD (or an older device with an upgraded SSD), yes, one may experience a performance hit when the SSD starts to become very full.

The scary part of using up almost all your storage space is your SSD will have an exponentially higher chance to die without warning. You do NOT want to literally use up every last bit of your SSD space. You can lose all of your data that way.

For me, this is less of an issue on an iPad since all data on mine is synced with either cloud or NAS.

On the PC, there’s a gap between when I work on stuff and when the nightly backup script kicks in.

That said, I stick to at least 20% free space. Not only does it help with SSD health, it also avoids some of the annoying iOS/apps behavior I’ve experienced before when free space drops to less than 20%.

The iPad doesn’t need any more care in this regard than any other computers. If storage is low the user should act.

The iPad can stay full without issues more easily than a laptop, because it does not use swap (except the M1/M2). I have a 16GB iPad mini 2 that has been full for 8 years and still works perfectly and is used every day. The fact there there are no more updates and there there is basically no writing to the disk makes it much less vulnerable. I think it will still be working fine in 10 years.
