I would like to jailbreak my 4S which is currently running 5.1.1. Now, I didn't give jailbreaking a second thought for my iPad, but since this is a phone, and I need as reliable a connection as possible regarding work, I feel a bit more hesitant in performing this, and reactions in this forum seem to be mixed...though, it seems those who installed one too many tweaks ran into issues.

As for myself, the only tweaks I will install are
- SBSettings
- biteSMS
- Tweak to hide Newsstand
- Tweak to hide the annoying badge on Settings compelling me to upgrade to iOS 6
- Maybe a GBA emulator...

If I stick to just these, would it be OK? I know that SBSettings alone is quite stable on my iPad, so that particular tweak doesn't bother me, but I'm not quite sure about the rest.

Don't go crazy with every crappy JB app you can find and you'll be just fine. I've never had an issue with even my 3GS or 4.

no issues on my iPhone 4S besides the springboard crashing on each boot but how many times do u reboot your phone really.

Several threads like this will confirm the same thing as above. I love my 4S and my jailbreak main reason I still have it and not a iPhone 5.

Careful you do not turn the 4S into an atomic device that will wipe out the world....!!

But seriously - avoid installing apps from dodgy sources (xsellize and the likes) and you should be fine!!

Also research any tweaks/apps on the interweb (macrumours/etc), only install should they have a good rating or comments, otherwise avoid them like you would with the plague!!

Does jailbreak severely affect 4S's performance?

As always: no JB itself doesn't affect performance. It's the tweaks that potentially cause that.

Of course. Everyone's not running the exact same set of tweaks or with the exact same settings.

No idea. Try them and see. Use standard troubleshooting if you run into problems -- or implement them one at a time and see how things go. The odds of finding someone that knows how all those work together is unlikely so don't sit around expecting someone to tell you if that combo is ok or not.

If you use redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1, you should not see any problems.

However some tweaks can affect your devices stability and performance.
Others can however improve upon it. (I.E. nitrous)

  • My tip to you is to not pirate paid tweaks, some cracks are not well made.
  • Look at places like iDownloadblog which posts in depth videos of awesome tweaks you can look at before you download.
  • Don't go way overboard with the amount of tweaks installed at a time. I had about 50 tweaks on my iPad 2 (at 5.0.1) and it was hanging in there no problem, until one day Appstore Apps started to crash, wifi wouldnt work and more. All problems were probably one tweak alone. I did not care to find out so I went for a clean slate and upgraded to 5.1.1 yesterday. Installed about 10 tweaks, rest will come along as I remember I need them (if not they were probably not worth the cpu cycles anyway)

EDIT:
It should be noted that my iPad went without a software restore for about a year. So I am contempt looking at the way I am using the operatingsystem.

With my 3G, 3GS, and 4 there was a clear cap and it wasn't too high of a number. But since I've gotten the 4S it's virtually impossible to slow this beast down with high quality, very respected tweaks. Sure you could install beta or alpha versions of tweaks and instantly run into problems, but if you stick with popular, well polished packages the 4S will hardly skip a beat. Incredible machine. I can only imagine how the 5 would perform!

My jail broken 4S on 5.1.1 runs excellent.
I have:
Pandora skips tweak
Sbsettings
Winter board + few interchanging themes
Swipesiri - tweak
Nownow (google voice by finger swipe)
Bitesms
Nonewsisgoodnews tweak - hides newstand
No app store badge tweak - hides app store update badges
Software update killer tweak - disables phone from being able to update/hides badge
Wekillbackgroundapp tweak - button in notification center to kill all running apps
Siri launch - tweak to have Siri button in notification center

My phone still runs fast as ever. I love the 4S! It's gonna be hard to give this phone up next year when I'm eligible for an upgrade. Out of all my phones, I'm attached to my 4S the most.
