I will be getting a Mac Pro 2009 with 2x Quad Core Xeon 2.26 GHz very soon.

I know there is a simple way to upgrade firmware to 12-core machine just by flashing the firmware to Mac Pro 2010 and then replacing the CPU's and memory with 1333 MHz.

However I'm scared replacing CPU's on this 2009 board because of lack of socket clamps and many horrible histories with it. What if I would buy a Mac Pro 2010 Dual CPU board, upgrade firmware, install 6-core CPU's and heatsinks from Mac Pro 2009 ? Will they fit or are there some changes ?

Just swap the CPUs on the 2009 board. I've done it multiple times without an issue. Plenty of people have done it. Most of the posts I've seen trying to talk people out of it come from those who don't even have a 2009 8-core
